Beam splitters in atom interferometry

Abstract:
Atom interferometry is useful in measuring physical quantities precisely. In atom
interferometers, light pulses direct matter waves into different paths by atom-light
interactions. People call these kinds of operations as beam splitters, analog to its
optical counterparts. A good choice in beam splitters is crucial in designing an
atom interferometer to achieve its goals of measurements.
I will divide my presentation into two parts. In the first part, I will present
different beam splitters and discuss their distinguished properties. In the second
part, I will present our recent approach in making a controllable asymmetric Raman
transition as a novel beam splitter. The asymmetric feature of this transition would
make non-neglectable entanglement between light and atoms, which could bring
interesting results by replacing old beam splitter into this new one.
