Abstract:
Quantum computing offers the potential for an exponential speed-up of certain classes of computational problems, and, as such, the development of a practical quantum computer has been a field of intense research over the past two decades. Yet, it is still early in the development of these systems, as we have just reached the point at which laboratory experiments have shown that quantum computers can outperform classical computers at certain computational tasks and that quantum error correction protocols are viable. As such, it is an exciting time in the field, analogous to the early days of classical computer development.
In this talk, I will describe Google's approach to quantum computing, highlighting recent experiments. No prior knowledge of quantum computing is assumed. The talk will begin with a brief overview of quantum computing and how it differs from classical computing. I will then explain Google's roadmap to a useful fault-tolerant quantum computer, highlighting key steps along the way. Then I will explain how a quantum computer can be built using practical components, leveraging Google's Sycamore quantum computer as an example. Following this, I will explain where Google is on our roadmap, describing recently published experimental results. I will then describe forward-looking research focused on cryogenic integrated circuits for future quantum computers before concluding with a discussion of what engineering must be done to build million-qubit scale quantum computers.
